HOWELL, MI Police are looking into an email that appears to be an attempt at “swatting” sent to the Howell Public Schools in Livingston County.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, May 21, Howell Police Chief Michael Dunn stated that school employees in the district received an email threatening to carry out the “biggest mass shooting in Michigan history.” According to authorities, no particular school was targeted in the threat, and the individual mentioned in the email is not a Howell student.

Police think the email originated outside of the US and is an attempt at “swatting,” which is the practice of sending a SWAT squad to a site in response to a fictitious allegation. According to the authorities, the threat was not thought to be genuine. Police noted that there seems to be a connection between the crime and online gaming, and they advised parents to keep an eye on their kids’ online behavior. Police stated, “We understand the anxiety and aggravation that these threats may cause, but we also know that everyone involved in this matter responded right away to ensure our community’s safety.”
