Born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to U.S. Navy officer Walter Bergman, Peter Bergman graduated from Crossland Senior High School in Maryland. He was married to Christine Ebersole from 1976 to 1981 and has been married to Mariellen since 1985; they have two children.

Bergman’s first major role was Dr. Cliff Warner on “All My Children.” He gained further recognition in a 1986 Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup ad campaign with the line, “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV,” succeeding Chris Robinson.
